How The Best Make It Look Easy

"If I had eight hours to chop down a tree, I'd spend six hours sharpening my ax." - Abraham Lincoln, Kind of a Memorable Guy

People say they best make it look easy. That's true! But that's because they're often up late getting sharper while others sleep. It's hard work making things look easy!  I'm working on myself this week by studying Christian Coaching by Gary R. Collins, PhD and Start Where You Are by Chris Gardner of The Pursuit of Happyness fame.  Both in terms of moving parts of my vision forward and in helping others do the same, I've grown a lot already.  Also, reading excites me.  It focuses me.  It motivates me to achieve more and whenever I'm in the middle of a good book I wonder why I don't read more! (I read a lot.)

For you, remember to keep your ax sharp! Here are some ways to get started today:

1. Read to expand your horizons.  I like to read biographies that tell me the stories of others' lives or books that show me parts of the world I've not yet seen.  They spark my imagination!
2. Study to deepen your knowledge.  If there's a more specific area you want to improve in, why not find three to five books on that single topic and dive in!  Increase your expertise to increase your income.
3. Meet new people.  You can learn from anybody and what better way than to put yourself in a position to see another point of view?
4.  Ask challenging questions.  It is said that your life expands or contracts in relation to the questions you ask.  Ask better questions and you'll get better answers.

A dull instrument might be able to get the job done, but it will take a whole lot longer.  That's exactly the way you might feel right now.  Maybe your edge has become worn down from much use?  No crime in that.  Be wise to slow down and get your edge back.

What are some other ways to sharpen your ax? Let me know!

You miss 100% of the shots you don't take."

"You miss one hundred percent of the shots you don't take." - Wayne Gretzky

I love that quote! It reminds me of my favorite scene from "Good Will Hunting" by far! Even your closest friends will get tired of hearing you talk about the shots you COULD make if you ever get in the game.

More important the quote and Ben Affleck are speaking directly to me where I am today.  I'm a big talker.  Always have been.  Also, I've got a few areas in which I've been talking BIG that I need to back up with some BIG action.  No more sitting on the sidelines talking about what I could do.  It's time to do!

I saw this quote this morning and it made me wonder to myself "Am I being a coward?  Am I really planning or am I hesitating out of fear?"  The Mark I know doesn't wait.  The Mark I've come to know acts and there is no way I can allow even an ounce of stagnation in my own life even as I coach and counsel people on how to create instant momentum on their own lives!

I am reminding myself even as I write this that there is no failure in God.  He causes all things to work together for my good.  There are too many people cheering me on for me to be satisfied sitting on the sidelines.  There is no benefit to the world in my playing small.  I play big!

Get in the game with me!

"I'm responsible for what I say, not what you hear!"

Let me let you into my head a little bit. When I start to see a statement become more and more popular, it makes me wonder "What would God say to that?" and I start searching it out. I saw this again this morning and it made me wonder: "If it truly matters that they get the message, and I've got the message they need to hear, do I then have any responsibilities towards that?"

"I'm responsible for what I say, not what you hear!"

Well... slow down a bit on that one. I disagree.  At least, I'm not 100% sure that's true.  Of course you are responsible for what people hear!  Part of effective communication is laboring to make sure people hear what you're saying. Good communicators don't put all the burden on the listeners. Good communicators work to bring the message in a way the hearer can hear it.

Paul speaks to this in a manner...

"Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law), so as to win those not having the law. To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings." - 1 Corinthians 9:19-23

I think the key is this: How much does it matter to you that they get the message? Or are you satisfied with simply getting your own words out? Maybe to satisfy your flesh?

We all listen with our own biases. I claim that. We filter everything through our own lenses. If you have a critical message filled with life-altering wisdom, you might need to work it some. It doesn't appear that you get to use the other person's inability to grasp what you're saying as a cop out. Paul seems to be teaching that you should learn the lens through which you're being heard and adapt accordingly.

If you truly care and if it truly matters, take some responsibility for what people hear, too, in addition to what you say. I know it's difficult but, after all, to whom much is given...
